The incident occurred along Gbagi market road in Egbeda Local Government Area, while the student, accompanied by his father and twin brother, was en route to his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) centre.
Eyewitnesses said the student was hit when officers fired shots at a fleeing vehicle. “A police officer opened fire while chasing a fleeing vehicle.
One of the bullets reportedly hit the student,” a witness identified as Ajani told PUNCH. “He was on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother.”
The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
In protest, angry youths carried the student’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, demanding justice and calling on Governor Seyi Makinde to take immediate action.
The remains have since been deposited at Adeoyo Hospital morgue.
