The convict saved the court from a prolonged trial
A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old teenager to 10 strokes of the cane for breaking into a residence and stealing electrical cables valued at N450,000.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel handed down the sentence after the teenager, who resides in Kinkinau, Kaduna, pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate said the light punishment was imposed because the convict saved the court from a prolonged trial, stating, “I hope this will serve as a deterrent to others.”
The court also ordered that the recovered cables be returned to the complainant, Sadiq Yusuf.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the offence occurred on May 17 at Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna.
According to him, the convict and one Mohammed Sani, who is currently at large, broke into the complainant’s house and stole the electrical cables.
He added that a neighbour witnessed the act and raised the alarm, leading to the arrest.
