Real reason I met Tinubu – Obi

Let me categorically state that I have never sought an audience with, nor met, President Tinubu since he assumed office, except about 1 minute meeting…

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has clarified the circumstances of his brief meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rome. In a post on his X handle, Obi stated the interaction lasted only about a minute during the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Obi addressed speculation linking the encounter to a purported N225 billion debt involving Fidelity Bank, where he previously served as Chairman. “One such individual… falsely claimed that I went to Rome to have a private meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding a purported N225 billion debt crisis involving Fidelity Bank. These claims are not only baseless, malicious, but entirely false,” he said.

The former Anambra governor further clarified that he does not own Fidelity Bank. “Fidelity has over 500,000 shareholders… none of whom hold a majority stake,” Obi stated, condemning those he described as “blackmailers.”
