President Bola Tinubu says democracy thrives with choice and insists that a one-party system is unhealthy, even as he receives full APC endorsement for a second term.

President Bola Tinubu has declared that a one-party system is unsuitable for democracy, despite the rising dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu said citizens must retain the right to choose their political associations.

“A one-party system is not suitable for democracy. You don’t expect people to remain in a sinking ship without a life jacket,” Tinubu stated.

The summit, attended by APC leaders, the National Working Committee, 22 governors, and National Assembly leadership, saw Tinubu unanimously endorsed for a second term, according to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu highlighted economic reforms under his administration, including the removal of exchange rate arbitrage and ongoing tax reforms. He praised cabinet members and lawmakers for their support.

“Yes, we encountered challenges when we assumed office in May 2023, but we have made progress by implementing difficult, long overdue but necessary economic reforms,” he said.
