Nigeria’s Interior Minister has warned airlines against bringing passengers without valid visas into the country, stressing that violators will be penalised under new immigration regulations.

The Federal Government has warned that airlines transporting passengers into Nigeria without valid visas, landing, and exit cards will face strict penalties.

Speaking in Lagos at a stakeholder sensitisation event, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated, “No foreigner shall be allowed entry into Nigeria without a valid visa.”

He called on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to enforce compliance, emphasizing national security. “Before anybody comes into Nigeria, please see their visas, not just proof of payment or their tickets,” he said, noting such practices are standard in countries like the U.K. and U.S.

The new e-Visa system, introduced May 1, has processed 5,814 applications, with 5,671 approvals. It features a 48-hour turnaround, biometric tracking, and travel logs.

NCAA DG, Capt. Chris Najomo, described the e-Visa as a step toward global aviation standards. The NIS will also begin enforcing a $15 daily fine for visa overstays from September 1, 2025.
