“We collected ₦1.3 trillion in Q1 2025 alone. This was not due to higher import volumes… What has changed are efficiency, transparency, and enforcement,” he said.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated ₦1.3 trillion in revenue in Q1 2025, more than twice the ₦600 billion collected in the same period in 2023. Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi credited the increase to President Bola Tinubu’s reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We collected ₦1.3 trillion in Q1 2025 alone. This was not due to higher import volumes… What has changed are efficiency, transparency, and enforcement,” he said.
Adeniyi highlighted new technology, tighter enforcement, and a culture of accountability as key drivers. The upcoming $3.2 billion E-Customs project aims to digitise cargo and payment processes, while a new Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) scheme is reducing port congestion.
Over ₦64 billion was recovered from under-assessed imports, and smuggling rings were dismantled at major borders. Clearance times at Apapa and Tin Can Ports have dropped to seven to ten days. “The results are beginning to speak for themselves,” Adeniyi added.
