Dual citizenship is the new American dream…

A growing number of Americans, especially younger generations, are considering dual citizenship as a way to secure better opportunities amid political and economic uncertainty.

A Harris Poll survey found 42% of U.S. adults have thought about relocating abroad, with 63% of Gen Z and 52% of millennials considering the move.

Tim Osieki of The Harris Poll told Newsweek, “While dual citizenship used to be reserved for retirees, the wealthy, or those with strong family ties abroad, it’s now a growing goal for middle-class Americans who want more control over their future.”

David Lesperance, an immigration adviser, said the trend began after Donald Trump’s 2016 election and accelerated during the pandemic and political unrest. He likened it to preparing for a wildfire: “Your fire insurance would be an alternative residence or alternative citizenship.”

Interest is rising among wealthy Americans as well, with firms reporting significant increases in applications for second passports. However, experts warn U.S. citizens must still comply with IRS tax rules despite dual citizenship.
