Obi urged leaders to shift focus from tribal and religious politics to competence and nation-building…
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said Northern Nigeria is vital to solving the country’s challenges, describing the region as “Nigeria’s greatest untapped asset.”
Speaking at a strategic meeting with Northern political stakeholders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi stressed that insecurity in the region stems from poverty, not religion or ethnicity.
“You cannot fight poverty without education. And you cannot fight insecurity without addressing hunger and hopelessness,” he said.
Obi urged leaders to shift focus from tribal and religious politics to competence and nation-building, drawing comparisons to Bangladesh and the Netherlands.
Former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami backed the call, warning that the North must act urgently. “The time for talk is over. It’s time for action,” he said.
The event closed with a pledge to form a pan-Nigerian coalition rooted in trust, shared purpose, and visionary governance.
