Ten Hag replaces Alonso, who led Leverkusen to a historic double before joining Real Madrid.

Erik ten Hag has been appointed head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, the German club confirmed Monday. The former Manchester United boss replaces Xabi Alonso, who led Leverkusen to the Bundesliga and German Cup titles in 2023–24 before being named Real Madrid manager on Sunday. Alonso succeeds Carlo Ancelotti in the Spanish capital.

Ten Hag left United in October 2024 after a mixed tenure, during which he won the League Cup and FA Cup. “Bayer Leverkusen is a club with great ambition, talent, and history,” Ten Hag said. “I’m honoured to join and look forward to working with this exciting group of players.”
