Senator Orji Uzor Kalu says President Tinubu’s economic reforms are causing hardship because Nigerians are used to “getting easy money.” He believes the benefits will be felt in 2–3 years.

Former Abia State Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, blaming Nigeria’s current hardship on citizens’ dependence on “easy money.”

Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly Tuesday, Kalu said the suffering is expected due to the scrapping of fuel subsidy and unification of exchange rates.

“This is the first President who stopped the fuel subsidy… who merged the dollar rates,” he said. “We’re used to getting easy money. People sit at home, use their phones, get dollars, and sell at very high rates.”

Kalu, who is also Senate Chief Whip, admitted Nigerians are struggling, but insisted the policies would bear fruit in 2–3 years.

On Tinubu’s possible re-election, he said: “It is in the interest of everyone, both in the North and the South, for Tinubu to return… The most he can stay is eight years. After that, we take back our country.”

He urged Nigerians to support the President and refrain from speaking ill of the country.
