“It is easier to make younger children become tax compliant when they grow up than reformed tax dodging adults” – FIRS Chairman
To mark Children’s Day, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Tuesday launched a book titled “Taxation: Essential Knowledge for Nigerian Children” at Merit House, Abuja.
The book was developed in collaboration with Arojah Concepts and Sprezzatura Publishing Ltd to promote tax education among children.
FIRS chairman Zacch Adedeji, represented by adviser Aisha Hamman, said research showed a positive link between tax education and compliance. “When children are educated, they grow up to be responsible citizens who pay their taxes and do what is right,” he stated.
Adedeji noted that less than 20% of Nigerians pay taxes and emphasized early education as key to improving compliance. “It is easier to make younger children become tax compliant when they grow up than reformed tax dodging adults,” he said.
Co-author Aderonke Atoyebi said over 60,000 copies will be distributed to schools and libraries. The event was attended by schoolchildren and stakeholders in education and publishing.
