NANS has criticised WAEC for holding a major English exam as late as 7 p.m., calling it unsafe and a sign of systemic failure.
Abuja — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the delayed conduct of the English Language paper in the ongoing SSCE exams, labelling it unsafe and poorly managed.
In a statement by NANS spokesperson Adeyemi Ajasa, the group slammed the 7 p.m. rescheduling as “a shocking level of insensitivity” following an alleged question leak.
“This development… demonstrates a gross disregard for the safety and well-being of Nigerian students, particularly those in rural communities,” Ajasa said.
NANS said students were exposed to danger returning home late and forced to sit for a critical paper under poor lighting conditions. The group linked the delay to recurring exam paper leakages, calling it “a clear indication of systemic failures in WAEC’s security measures.”
They urged WAEC to investigate the breach, train staff, and adopt better tech-based safeguards. NANS also demanded a public apology and warned it would escalate the issue if no reforms follow.
