A mistrial has been declared in the homicide case against Diego Maradona’s medical team, lawyers for the defendants said on Thursday.
The ruling followed the resignation of Judge Julieta Makintach, one of three judges presiding over the trial, after she was accused of breaching ethical standards.
The court has not yet announced a new trial date or the replacement judges.
The case, which captivated Argentina, involves seven medical professionals accused of negligence in Maradona’s 2020 death. The defendants deny the charges of “simple homicide with eventual intent,” which carry sentences of eight to 25 years.
Maradona died of heart failure at age 60 while recovering from surgery for a brain haematoma.
A video surfaced showing Judge Makintach being filmed inside the courthouse, reportedly for a documentary, in violation of judicial protocol.
“He dubbed his controversial first goal the ‘Hand of God’,” one part of his legacy reads.
