“The surging floodwaters submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses with their occupants.”

At least 21 people, including a woman and her two children, have died following a devastating midnight flood that submerged over 50 houses in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The flood, triggered by hours of torrential rainfall on Tuesday night, wreaked havoc in Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities.

Several vehicles were also trapped, and many residents remain unaccounted for.

“The agency, in collaboration with the Mokwa Local Government Authority, local divers, and brave volunteers, are conducting search and rescue operations,” said the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency.

Drivers and commuters caught in the deluge struggled to navigate the rising waters with no immediate rescue assistance.

As of Wednesday, 21 corpses had been recovered, while survivors, including a woman and her children, were receiving treatment at Mokwa General Hospital.
