Niger : Flood kills 12 family members, dozens missing in midnight disaster

Although the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed 21 dead, residents said the casualty figure could be over 60.

A devastating midnight flood in Mokwa LGA, Niger State, has claimed at least 21 lives – including an entire 12-member family – with over 50 persons, mostly women and children, still missing.

The Wednesday torrential downpour submerged Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities, destroying homes and sweeping away victims, including Binta, a health student visiting for holidays. While NSEMA confirms 21 deaths, locals fear the toll exceeds 60.

“Whole families were washed away while sleeping,” a survivor told Daily Trust. NSEMA officials stated: “Search operations continue for missing almajirai and residents as waters recede.
