“I find it unacceptable because I was supposed to graduate in 2025, and that’s not even possible anymore. Rather than allow me to graduate in 2026, however, they are insisting on a 2027 graduation year.”
Middlesex University, Mauritius, has maintained a 2027 graduation date for Michael Adelani (not real name), a Nigerian law student who faced academic setbacks due to visa-related issues. Adelani revealed the development during a telephone interview with FIJ, stating that despite missing classes and assignments, the university counted the academic years he spent away and insisted on full tuition payments.
“I had a Zoom meeting with Middlesex University today,” Adelani said. “The officials I spoke with at the meeting claimed the university wanted to see how it can support me. They, however, still insisted on a 2027 graduation date.”
Adelani’s academic journey was disrupted in 2023 when he discovered his visa had expired while preparing for a job interview. After reporting the issue, he was allowed to return to Nigeria to renew it. Despite being temporarily detained at an airport in Mauritius and facing significant delays, the university has refused to adjust his graduation timeline.
