Stan Collymore has thrown his support behind Liam Delap’s reported £30m move to Chelsea, calling it a smart choice for both the club and the player.

Stan Collymore has backed Liam Delap’s reported £30 million move to Chelsea, describing it as a smart transfer for both player and club. The 22-year-old Ipswich Town striker is expected to reunite with Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who managed him in Manchester City’s academy.

Collymore wrote in his CaughtOffside column: “The signing of Liam Delap is a very good one. I think it was a clear choice for him to pick Chelsea over the likes of Man United and Newcastle, as there is far more of a pedigree. And on top of this, he already knows guys like Maresca and Cole Palmer. There is also more of a settled environment for him at Chelsea compared to someone like Man United.”

Delap impressed during a difficult season with relegated Ipswich, and many believe his output could grow with better service at Stamford Bridge. While competition from Nicolas Jackson awaits, Collymore sees Chelsea as the right fit for Delap’s next step.
