President Trump announced plans to raise steel and aluminum tariffs from 25% to 50%, starting June 4. “Nobody’s going to get around that,” he said, defending his trade policy as vital to U.S. industry.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that steel and aluminum import tariffs will double from 25% to 50%, effective June 4. Speaking at a U.S. Steel plant in Pennsylvania, Trump said, “We’re going to bring it from 25 percent to 50 percent, the tariffs on steel into the United States of America.”

He emphasized the move protects American jobs, adding the steel plant wouldn’t exist without his earlier tariffs. Trump also confirmed the 50% tariff applies to aluminum imports.

The tariffs have faced legal challenges but remain in place after an appellate court ruling. Trump touted a partnership between U.S. Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel but said, “U.S. Steel will continue to be controlled by the USA,” and promised no layoffs or outsourcing.

Trump’s trade policies continue to reshape global markets amid ongoing disputes with trading partners.
