A 59-year-old philanthropist, Bernd Kebbel, was killed by a lioness near Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in Namibia while on a wildlife expedition.

Kebbel, known for funding desert lion conservation, had left his rooftop tent to use the toilet early Friday morning when the attack occurred.

According to Namibian police, he was ambushed and fatally mauled by the lioness, despite fellow campers’ efforts to drive the animal away.

“It was too late to save him from the fatal injuries inflicted to his neck,” a police spokesman stated.

Tourism ministry spokesperson Ndeshipanda Hamunyela confirmed the death, adding, “Our team is on the ground investigating.”

A lion expert warned, “These lions are fast, strong, and very hungry – hungry enough to risk attacking a feared human.”

Locals fear the lioness, named Charlie, may be hunted. Kebbel’s children, Dieter and Heidi, are returning to Windhoek to support their grieving mother, Conny.
