The IAEA warned Iran is “the only non-nuclear-weapon state to produce such material,” calling it a matter of “serious concern.” Approximately 92 pounds of such uranium could produce one bomb if enriched to 90.2%.
Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said in a confidential report seen Saturday.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported Iran had 900.8 pounds of uranium enriched up to 60% as of May 17 — nearly 50% more than in February.
The IAEA warned Iran is “the only non-nuclear-weapon state to produce such material,” calling it a matter of “serious concern.” Approximately 92 pounds of such uranium could produce one bomb if enriched to 90.2%, the agency noted.
The overall stockpile reached 20,387.4 pounds. IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said Tehran has enough material to make “several” bombs.
Israel called the findings proof that “Iran is totally determined to complete its nuclear weapons program.” Grossi urged Iran to “cooperate fully and effectively” with investigations. The U.S. believes Iran hasn’t started a weapons program but is better positioned to do so.
