Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that Nigeria is facing its worst crisis since 1914 due to deepening poverty and leadership failure. Speaking in Abuja at the 60th birthday lecture of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, El-Rufai said, “So here we are, back together, because Nigeria is in its greatest crisis since 1914. We are working and conspiring to build a coalition to get Nigeria back on track because it has gone off track.”
He dismissed claims that politicians intentionally weaponise poverty, saying, “I don’t think so. Poverty weaponises itself if allowed to exist… Politicians are not that smart to even sit and weaponise poverty.” He lamented that Nigeria often entrusts leadership to people lacking the competence to govern effectively.
“What we have done in this country is to allow bandits—not the ones in the bushes, but the urban bandits—to take over the governance of our country,” El-Rufai stated.
