President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate activation of the National Emergency Response Centre following Wednesday night’s devastating flood in Niger State, which claimed 151 lives and displaced over 3,000 people.
The flood, caused by heavy rains, swept away the Mokwa Bridge, stranding hundreds of trailers carrying food and livestock, raising fears of a sharp rise in prices ahead of the Eid el-Kabir celebration.
“This is a tragedy. We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of,” Tinubu said via his official X account.
Ministers Mohammed Idris and Nentawe Yilwatda visited the scene, promising relief and long-term solutions, including drainage construction.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba confirmed the damage: “503 households were affected, 265 houses destroyed. Immediate intervention is needed.”
Federal authorities have pledged collaboration with state officials to mitigate future disasters.
