Kano pollution emergency: Toxic air triggers respiratory disease outbreak

“Air pollution can lead to asthma attacks and other forms of respiratory disease; over time you can even have lung cancer or neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s or other mental health issues.”

The Kano State Government has declared air pollution in Gaida, Ja’en, Sabon Titi, and Sharada Market unsafe after environmental tests revealed dangerous PM2.5 levels (24.2µg/m³). Residents report surging respiratory illnesses, with one TB survivor linking his condition to the foul air. The Ministry of Environment attributes the crisis to industrial emissions and chaotic urbanization, pledging emergency interventions.

“We live near industries spewing chemicals at night,” said Ja’en resident Ibrahim Sulaiman, citing a “coughing epidemic” in his neighborhood. Health expert Prof. Isa Abubakar warned: “This pollution causes asthma, lung cancer, even neurological diseases.”
