Nigerian banks and telecom operators are at odds over plans to deduct USSD banking charges from customers’ airtime starting June 3, with telcos insisting no formal agreement exists. While lenders like FCMB and StanbicIBTC notified customers of the N6.98-per-session charge shift, ALTON chairman Gbenga Adebayo revealed banks must first clear N160 billion in outstanding USSD debts before migration can occur. The NCC-mediated resolution requires banks to settle old debts and establish billing safeguards to prevent double charges.
“Migration can only happen after banks clear obligations and protocols are agreed,” Adebayo told The Guardian, warning of potential “double billing” risks. Banks maintain the change follows “NCC directives.”
