Non-academic staff at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, staged a protest accusing the Ondo State Police Command of disobeying a court order to return a union vehicle seized during a leadership dispute.
Non-academic staff at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), on Wednesday protested the Ondo State Police Command’s alleged refusal to return a union vehicle as ordered by a court.
Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), FUTA chapter, said the police ignored a January 2025 Magistrate Court directive to return the seized vehicle.
“We are voicing our grievances over the Ondo State Police Command’s intrusion into our union matters,” NASU chairman Adebayo Aladerotohun said. “It is well known that issues of association fall outside the jurisdiction of the Nigerian Police.”
He said the police seized the car in June 2024 during a union dispute and later handed it to unknown persons, despite a court order to return it to NASU.
The union urged IGP Kayode Egbetokun to intervene.
Police spokesperson Olayinka Alayande denied wrongdoing, stating, “The court ordered that the vehicle be released to the Secretariat, and that was done.” He urged aggrieved members to seek legal redress peacefully.
