President Trump is planning an “unapologetic” celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, starting with a military parade on Flag Day, June 14.
The festivities include a National Garden of Heroes and patriotic videos in collaboration with Hillsdale College.
A White House official said the commemoration aims to be “the largest, most inspiring and unifying” in U.S. history.
However, historians and activists urge a more reflective approach. James Grossman of the American Historical Association said, “To apologize for the harms we have done to others is gracious, generous, and a good learning experience for all of us.”
Anneisha Hardy, of Alabama Values, criticized the focus on 1776, saying, “In 1619, enslaved Africans were brought to these shores against their will.”
The debate continues over whether 1776 or 1619 marks America’s true beginning, with critics accusing Trump’s plan of ignoring historical injustices, while supporters focus on national pride and unity.
