Bombs above, burlesque below: Strip club stays open as war rages in Ukraine

Despite the war raging on, Flash Dancers strip club located in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, offers its customers a brief moment of indulgence amidst the horrors of war.

Flash Dancers, a women-owned strip club in war-torn Kharkiv, remains open daily despite Russian attacks, providing both entertainment and refuge. Owner Valeriya Zavadskaya—whose mother founded the club—said it offers a mental “switch” from the war, with its underground location doubling as a bomb shelter. Though prostitution is illegal, authorities tolerate the business as Ukraine grapples with larger crises.

“It’s difficult to earn a living in just one job now,” said Zavadskaya. “We’re a sanctuary.” Patrons and dancers shelter there during air raids, with boarded-up windows shielding performances.
