The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had begun launching ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones at the capital and other cities overnight. Multiple fires were reported across Kyiv, including at a 16-story apartment block. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least three people had been injured, and officials cautioned that the toll could rise as the attack was still underway.
KYIV, Ukraine – Russian drones attacked Ukraine’s capital early on Friday, triggering a series of explosions and starting fires in residential buildings in multiple parts of the city, according to local authorities and Reuters witnesses.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported that the drones approached in waves and that air defence systems were engaged in repelling them. He later warned of a potential follow-up attack using ballistic missiles.
Officials confirmed that a drone struck the upper floors of a high-rise apartment building in the eastern Darnytskyi district, starting a fire and leading to possible emergency power cuts. A fire also broke out in an apartment building in a western district of the city. An unofficial Telegram channel reported that a shopping center in the Darnytskyi area was ablaze.
Drone fragments were reportedly spotted in three districts. As of early Friday, officials were still working to collate details on the full extent of the damage and any potential casualties from the widespread attack.
