Family reveals how ‘gwogwogwom-gwo’ highlife legend, Mike Ejeagha, died

Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, in Ezeagu Council Area of Enugu State, Ejeagha rose to prominence during the 1960s and 1980s with timeless hits like Omekagu, Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma, and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche – Gwogwogwom.

Renowned Nigerian highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, popularly known as “Gentleman,” has passed away at 95 after battling a long illness, his family confirmed Saturday.

Ejeagha died Friday night at the 32 Garrison Military Hospital in Enugu, his son Emmanuel told reporters. “My father passed away due to a long-standing ailment,” he said. The legendary artist, born April 4, 1930, in Enugu State, rose to fame in the 1960s-80s with hits like Omekagu and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche.

With over 300 recordings archived nationally, Ejeagha’s music preserved Igbo folklore and culture. His 1983 track Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche recently regained popularity through a 2024 viral dance challenge, introducing his work to new generations.
