Pope Leo XIV will make a virtual appearance at a sold-out event in Chicago on June 14, the same day as a large military parade in Washington, D.C.
Backed by President Trump and marking the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, the parade includes over 6,700 troops, tanks, and aircraft, and will disrupt travel in the capital.
“Although Pope Leo XIV will not be present in Chicago for the event, he has announced that he will be participating remotely from Rome,” the Vatican said. His appearance will feature a video message shown at Rate Field, drawing over 20,000 ticketed attendees.
Commentators labeled the overlap “counterprogramming,” especially amid Pope Leo’s clashes with Trump on immigration. “Citizens and immigrants alike” are “equally worthy of dignity and protection,” Leo said.
Critics argue the parade is excessive and politically motivated. Cardinal Blase Cupich will lead a mass after the pope’s message. Tickets remain available for the parade.
