LONDON (AP) — A British Army soldier has been arrested in Kenya over a rape allegation, according to the U.K. Ministry of Defense. Military police are currently investigating.
“We can confirm the arrest of a Service person in Kenya,” the ministry stated. “As the matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Defence Serious Crime Command, we will not comment further.”
The arrest comes amid ongoing concerns over British troops stationed in Kenya under a bilateral defense agreement. About 200 U.K. personnel are permanently based near Nanyuki, where past misconduct allegations have drawn scrutiny.
The 2012 death of Kenyan national Agnes Wanjiru, allegedly involving a British soldier, sparked outrage. Her family continues to seek justice. In April, U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey pledged to “help the family secure the justice they deserve.”
The British Army has launched a wider inquiry, stressing zero tolerance for misconduct and mandatory conduct training for deployed troops.
