For the Nigerian continent, seven pilgrims were reported to have died during the exercise following health complications.

The 2025 Hajj pilgrimage concluded Sunday, but seven Nigerian pilgrims died during the spiritual exercise, mostly due to age-related health complications.

The annual Islamic rite ended with pilgrims departing Muna after the symbolic stoning ritual at Jamarat. While most completed their Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), some elderly Nigerian pilgrims succumbed to health challenges. The deceased included Alhaji Sulaimon Hamzat (Oyo), Alhaji Saleh (Abia), and 75-year-old Adizatu Dazumi (Edo), who died after brief illnesses.

Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board Chairman Musah Uduimoh confirmed Dazumi’s death: “She was buried in Makkah…her family has been informed.” Despite Saudi Arabia’s extreme heat, all recorded Nigerian deaths involved elderly pilgrims with pre-existing conditions.

The Hajj, one of Islam’s five pillars, remains a cherished but physically demanding obligation, with this year’s fatalities highlighting risks for older participants. Nigerian authorities continue monitoring remaining pilgrims as they prepare to return home.
