A football fan died after falling from the stands during the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, UEFA has confirmed. The fatal incident occurred in the first half of extra time, when the spectator reportedly fell from the stadium’s central tier into the press box below — an estimated drop of about eight metres.
Emergency personnel and police responded swiftly, but the fan succumbed to injuries. UEFA later described the incident as a “medical emergency” and confirmed the fan’s death.
The match, which ended 2-2 and was won 5-3 on penalties by Portugal, was overshadowed by the tragedy. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente offered his condolences in a post-match conference: “It reminds us of what is important in life.”
Portugal’s representatives, including coach Roberto Martinez, also expressed sorrow, saying the loss “casts a shadow” over their victory. The cause of the fall remains unclear and is under investigation.
