California Governor Gavin Newsom called Trump’s order a ‘serious breach of state sovereignty
Protests erupted in downtown Los Angeles after U.S. President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops following federal immigration raids. Dozens were arrested in raids targeting undocumented migrants and alleged gang members, sparking outrage in the city’s large Latino community.
Clashes escalated as police declared the area an “unlawful assembly,” deploying tear gas and smoke grenades. Protesters torched vehicles, including three Waymo self-driving cars.
“You have the National Guard with loaded magazines and large guns standing around trying to intimidate Americans,” said protester Thomas Henning.
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Trump’s move as a “serious breach of state sovereignty” and vowed legal action.
“Don’t take Trump’s bait,” Newsom urged on X.
Trump called the protesters “insurrectionists” and posted, “ARREST THE PEOPLE IN FACE MASKS, NOW!”
Law enforcement reported 56 arrests in LA and 60 in San Francisco.
