Manchester United may turn to Viktor Gyokeres as a backup target after their move for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo hit a snag.
Manchester United are reportedly lining up Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres as a possible alternative to Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. The Red Devils had a £55 million bid for Mbeumo rejected last week, with the player said to be open to a move to Old Trafford.
However, Mbeumo’s future now appears tied to that of Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who is strongly tipped to become Tottenham Hotspur’s next manager. That development has pushed Spurs ahead in the race to sign the Cameroon international, potentially forcing United to shift focus.
United are believed to be considering Gyokeres, who has a release clause of €100 million (£84m), although Sporting could accept closer to £60m. The Swedish striker was coached by new United boss Ruben Amorim at Sporting, further fuelling speculation of a summer reunion.
With the first phase of the transfer window closing Tuesday ahead of the Club World Cup, United must act swiftly or wait until the market reopens on June 16.
