The Satanic Temple of Iowa has filed a complaint accusing state officials of religious discrimination after being denied access to the Capitol for a December 2024 holiday event and display.
The group gained attention in 2023 when a Mississippi man destroyed their approved Baphomet display. Despite assurances of a family-friendly event, their 2024 application was rejected.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa submitted the complaint on behalf of Mortimer Adramelech, the temple’s minister. “The simple truth is the State of Iowa does not want to allow Satanists to enjoy the same access to the Iowa State Capitol as other ‘mainstream’ religions,” the complaint states.
Adam Steen, director of administrative services, cited concerns about “obscene materials” and costumes with sticks that could be “used as weapons on children.” The ACLU also filed a lawsuit in April over redacted records related to the decision.
Messages seeking comment from state officials and Gov. Kim Reynolds’ office were not returned.
