Senator Sunday Katung has defended his wife after a UK court forfeited a £1m property linked to money laundering allegations.
Senator Sunday Katung has defended his wife, Abigail Katung, after a UK court granted a forfeiture order on a £1 million property linked to money laundering concerns. The property, partially funded by Mrs Katung in 2015, was found to have been purchased using funds routed through unlicensed Bureau De Change operators to bypass Nigerian foreign exchange rules.
The court ruled that Mrs Katung was “conducting a business in foreign exchange transactions to circumvent Nigerian foreign exchange regulations and/or to avoid a punitive exchange rate,” and ordered the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) to take possession of the property.
In response, Senator Katung said, “For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung and his Wife, Abigail Katung have always conducted their affairs lawfully and transparently.” He added that the ruling is subject to appeal and criticised the media coverage as “sensational.” The judge noted Mrs Katung’s failure to disclose key documentation or submit a witness statement from her husband, calling the omissions “telling.”
