A heavy security presence was observed Thursday morning at Ikeja Underbridge, Lagos, as protesters gathered to mark the June 12 Democracy Day.
The Guardian reports that police operatives were seen patrolling the area, with demonstrators assembling peacefully under close surveillance.
In a post on X, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, wrote: “Democracy Day celebrants and protesters at Ikeja Underbridge. Adequate security on ground for celebrants and protesters alike. No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remains our priority.”
The Guardian also learnt that Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, met Wednesday with leaders of 15 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to discuss protest logistics.
The CSOs agreed to begin at Ikeja Underbridge and march jointly to Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota—designated as the sole protest venue.
Separately, security was also heightened around the National Assembly in Abuja ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day appearance before a joint session of the National Assembly.
