The security deployment came ahead of a planned demonstration by various civil society organisations and pro-democracy activists
A heavy police presence was observed on Thursday morning at the Ikeja underbridge in Lagos, where groups of protesters began to gather to mark June 12 Democracy Day. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Area F Division were deployed to the area, maintaining a visible presence to monitor and possibly control the protest activities. The security deployment came ahead of a planned demonstration by various civil society organisations and pro-democracy activists.
The protesters, who had not officially commenced the march as of press time, assembled to express discontent over worsening economic conditions, inflation, and rising insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Organisers said the demonstration aimed to draw attention to the daily hardships facing Nigerians, urging the government to prioritise policies that directly benefit the citizens. Police officers remained on high alert as tensions hovered, though the atmosphere was relatively calm in the early stages of the gathering.
