AHMEDABAD, India (CNN) — Vishwash Kumar Ramesh has been identified as the sole survivor of Air India Flight 171, which crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, killing 241 of 242 people on board. A British national of Indian origin, Ramesh was seen walking from the crash site in a bloodstained shirt.
“Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” Ramesh said from the hospital.
He had been returning to the UK with his brother, whose fate remains unknown.

Ramesh was reportedly seated in 11A, near the wing.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle,” said MP Shivani Raja.
The crash also killed people on the ground, including medical students.
The flight was bound for London Gatwick, carrying Indian, British, Canadian, and Portuguese nationals.
