Lawmakers have summoned Finance Minister Wale Edun and CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso over alleged fiscal violations and lapses flagged in Nigeria’s 2021 audit report.
The House of Representatives has summoned Wale Edun, Minister of Finance, and Yemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), over alleged violations of the Fiscal Responsibility Act and issues raised in the 2021 audit report by the Auditor-General of the Federation.
In a letter signed by Bamidele Salam and Ademorin Kuye, chairs of the public accounts and public assets committees, the officials were directed to appear before a joint committee session on June 16.
The lawmakers said reports from the Fiscal Responsibility Commission and Auditor-General show that several MDAs — including the CBN — either failed to remit or under-remitted operating surpluses in the past six years.
“These violations have negatively impacted the liquidity of the federal government and constitute a hindrance to the effective implementation of the budgets passed by parliament,” Salam said.
The probe also covers stalled projects paid for between 2011 and 2016 in locations such as Dutse and Abeokuta.
