A 39-year-old man was shot and killed during a “No Kings” protest in Utah on Saturday, police confirmed.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was described as an “innocent bystander participating in the demonstration,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd.
The protest, attended by around 10,000 people, was one of many opposing President Donald Trump’s birthday military parade. Violence erupted shortly before 8pm when gunshots rang out.
Three arrests were made, including Arturo Gamboa, 24, who suffered a minor gunshot wound. “Two peacemakers noticed Gamboa separating from the crowd before pulling out a rifle and charging toward the demonstrators,” Redd explained. One peacemaker fired three shots, hitting Gamboa and the victim.
SWAT medics attempted life-saving efforts, but the bystander died on Sunday. Officers found an “AR-15 style rifle” and gas mask in Gamboa’s backpack. He was treated at a hospital, then booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
