Military Deploys Air Surveillance in Benue as IGP Takes Over Security
The Nigerian military deployed air surveillance aircraft over Makurdi and surrounding areas on Sunday following attacks in Yelwata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
A military source said the operation is to “monitor the situation of things around Makurdi and its environs, so we will know how to tackle it swiftly,” assuring residents that “the military is on top of the situation.”
The development follows the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, assuming control of the state’s security.
Over 100 people reportedly died in the attacks, with many injured. In response, youths staged protests in Makurdi on Sunday, blocking the Wurukum roundabout.
Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari said, “The IG has taken over the security of Benue State… Special Forces are already on ground and more are coming.”
He urged for patience, assuring that efforts are underway to capture the perpetrators.
