“In Sokoto, we’re open to engaging in negotiations with bandits who are genuinely willing to surrender and embrace peace.” – Gov. Aliyu

SOKOTO — The Sokoto State Government says it is open to engaging repentant bandits in dialogue as part of a broader strategy to end insecurity.

Speaking to journalists, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Governor, said, “We wholeheartedly welcome any development that promotes peace and security in our region… In Sokoto, we’re open to engaging in negotiations with bandits who are genuinely willing to surrender and embrace peace.”

The move signals a shift from a solely militarised response to a dual approach that includes reconciliation.

In a related effort, Governor Ahmad Aliyu has approved a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Survey scheduled for June 19 to July 9. Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Zayyana, described it as vital to the governor’s Nine-Point Smart Agenda.

“This survey will provide the government with reliable and actionable insights,” Zayyana noted.

The state aims to reduce insecurity by tackling its socio-economic root causes through dialogue and data-driven development.
