“Bello is being tried for allegedly laundering N190bn, but senior lawyers praised his ‘youthful energy’ and ‘respect for the rule of law.’”
A retired Supreme Court justice and 13 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) have publicly celebrated former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s 50th birthday, even as he faces corruption trials over N190bn.
The tribute, published as a full-page newspaper ad, described Bello as a “remarkable public servant” with “respect for the rule of law”.
Signatories included Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki (Rtd), Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), and Professor Musa Yakubu (SAN), among others.
Bello is currently being prosecuted by the EFCC for allegedly laundering over N190bn between 2016 and 2022. One charge claims a Maitama property was paid for in USD. He has pleaded not guilty.
Despite a bench warrant and delays, the trial is ongoing at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The presidency also issued a goodwill message praising Bello’s leadership, with no mention of the charges.
The public show of support has raised questions, though legal experts say issuing birthday messages during trial is not unlawful.
