“I feel very happy and very proud,” said Wirtz after completing his move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that could become a British transfer record. The deal is worth $136 million (£100 million) with an additional $22 million (£16 million) in potential add-ons. Wirtz, 22, completed his medical and signed a long-term contract after scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists last season.

“I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it’s done,” Wirtz told club media. “I want to have something completely new… to join the Premier League.”

The Germany international added: “My goal is to win [the league] again and also go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”

He described the Premier League as “perfect” and said he looks forward to his first game.
