Leaders of the All Democratic
Alliance (ADA), a new coalition-led political movement, mistakenly addressed their application for party registration to the “Independent National Commission” instead of the “Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).” The letter, dated June 19 and co-signed by ADA national chairman Akin Ricketts and protem secretary Abdullahi Musa Elayo, was received by INEC on June 20.

Spearheaded by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, the coalition seeks official recognition for ADA, with the slogan “Justice for All.”

“We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance as a political party,” the letter stated. “This is sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.”

The clerical error has raised concerns over the legal validity of the application, which must comply with constitutional and Electoral Act provisions for party registration.
