Russia warns U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities risks igniting global catastrophe, urges de-escalation and offers to mediate
Russia has issued a stark warning following the United States’ unprecedented airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, cautioning that the attacks could lead the world to the brink of a nuclear disaster.
“Through their actions, the U.S. has opened a Pandora’s box,” said Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia during an emergency Security Council meeting on Sunday. “No one knows what new catastrophes and suffering it will bring.”
The U.S. launched 30 Tomahawk missiles from submarines, targeting Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. The strikes followed Israel’s recent offensive against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure.
Nebenzia warned of dire consequences: “Unless we stop the escalation, the Middle East will find itself on the verge of a large-scale conflict with unpredictable consequences for the entire international security system, plus the entire world might end up on the verge of a nuclear disaster.”
Russia has offered to mediate a resolution as global concern grows over the escalating conflict.
