The officers set a July 31 deadline for the government to end the contributory pension system.

Aggrieved officers of the Nigeria Police Force have issued a bold ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, threatening a nationwide strike beginning August 1 unless pension reforms are implemented by the end of July. Under the current Contributory Pension Scheme, described by officers as akin to “slavery,” personnel claim they remain financially vulnerable upon retirement .

In an open letter addressed to top government officials, the officers declared: “This shouldn’t come as a surprise. You are all aware of the slavery pension scheme police officers have been made to suffer.” “If the government fails, it will definitely experience another mother of all strikes from August 1, 2025. Mark our words.”

They further warned: “During this strike, if any officer found in uniform performing any duties, he or she may lose his or her lives, or remain maimed for life.”

The officers demand a switch from the contributory model to a defined benefits pension plan, mirroring military and other security services. With over 300,000 personnel nationwide, any disruption could significantly jeopardize national security. No official response has yet been issued by the presidency or police affairs ministry .
