Rita Uguamaye, known online as Raye, had criticised the government over economic hardship in a viral TikTok video.

LAGOS — The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied claims that it extended the service year of a corps member, Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, over her criticism of President Bola Tinubu.

Uguamaye had gone viral on TikTok after describing Tinubu as a “terrible leader” and decrying Nigeria’s economic woes. She also criticised living conditions in Lagos, calling the state “smelling.”

Following the video, she alleged being pressured by NYSC officials to delete the post. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the reported threats, vowing to protest any punitive action during the NYSC passing-out parade.

Reacting on Tuesday, NYSC spokesperson Carol Embu said, “NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation; we work with rules and regulations. She is still serving; if she has any issues, we will wait and see.”

Embu clarified that extensions are only decided during the passing-out process. Uguamaye has not confirmed any extension via her verified platforms.
